Who God Uses

Something I have learned in doing outreach is that there is nothing more valuable than a few hard workers that understand serving others and serving God. I would rather go out with a group of 2 or 3 people who are sold out to the cause and mission that God has put on our hearts than have 40 people show up to an outreach with no motivation or passion to serve others the way that God calls us to. I believe God feels the same way.

Scripture records many times when God chooses to use small numbers of believers that are sold out for the cause rather than a huge army. In fact God actually trims down numbers in order to show He is the one that is doing the great work and it is not man who wins victories for God, but it is God who uses humans who are sold out for his cause in order to win victories for Himself. I love Judges chapter 7. God actually makes Gideon’s army smaller… from 32 thousand to 300. God Says:

” You have too many men. I cannot deliver Midian into their hands, or Israel would boast against me, ‘My own strength has saved me.’ 3 Now announce to the army, ‘Anyone who trembles with fear may turn back and leave Mount Gilead.’” So twenty-two thousand men left, while ten thousand remained.

Later in the passage God trims the army down to 300 men and Gideon leads the army to defeat their enemies, the Midianites. I love what God says here… you have too many people, why don’t you trim down your army to the ones that are serious about serving me so that the world will know that it is Me not you who has delivered you into victory. I felt like we have been experiencing this in our outreaches lately.

A couple of Saturday’s ago we went out mowing lawns that looked like they could use a mowing in order to show Christ’s love in a practical way. We only had a group of 3, but they were 3 people who wanted to serve others and serve God in order to make His name great. I must brag on one of our team members named Jordan. Jordan had been mowing a lawn all the way in Fort Worth (about 3o min. away from Weatherford) the same morning we had our lawn mowing outreach. Jordan practically came directly from mowing a lawn early in the morning in a different city to come mow lawns for free in Weatherford in order to serve others in a way that is very practical. We have been talking a lot in our church about wanting people who are absolute Giant Killers… I truly believe that Jordan was an absolute Giant Killer that day. He wanted to be there and it was evident that God used him that day. Jordan found a way to be there because he understood that God will use the smallest act of service with a minimal numbered army in order to win himself a victory.

Yeah we only had 3 people, but we were able to mow 5 yards, one of which was a disabled families yard who could not mow their own yard and we were able to minister and pray with them. Also one of the yards was a student’s who had just gotten off the streets and looked like he was having a hard time. We got to minister to him and give him what I believe was his first true impression of who Christ truly is. God used a few sold out team members this past week to make his name great and there is no reason to believe God does not want to keep using small numbers to slay giants. We want to be doing things that God has to show up in. God promises to even be with 2 or 3 that gather in his name. Be courageous this week, grab a friend or two and set out to make God’s name great by being sold out to a cause that God has put on your heart.
